UPDATE: Kites to Soar Over Coopers Saturday for Cancer Foundation

Uniting Against Lung Cancer's Kites for a Cure returns to Southampton Village.

A Memorial Day weekend tradition in Southampton Village, a kite fly to benefit Uniting Against Lung Cancer, is happening Saturday at Coopers Beach and 1,100 participants are expected to attend.

The seventh annual Kites for a Cure is between 4 and 6 p.m. and parking fees at Coopers have been waived during the event.

For a $30 donation, participants are provided with a sturdy kite to decorate. Kids and adults alike create artwork, memorials and messages of hope.

UPDATE: Organizers say Kites for a Cure will definitely be held on Saturday, rain or shine.

Uniting Against Lung Cancer was founded in 2001 as Joan's Legacy in memory of Joan Scarangello McNeive, a journalist who split her time between New York and Southampton.

Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $10 million in lung cancer research grants concerning diagnosis, treatment and a cure, according to organizers.
