Expansion of Jermain Library to Break Ground Next Week

Renovation work remains underway at the Sag Harbor library during a project that will eventually double its size.

A construction project that will double the size of the 7,400-square-foot John Jermain Library in Sag Harbor is expected to break ground next week, according to Library Director Catherine Creedon, while renovation work continues on the standing 103-year-old structure.

A $9.9 million renovation and expansion project in full, roughly $2.5 million of the funding approved by local voters will be devoted to the new glass and limestone addition.

Creedon described the new space as a modern complement to the older brick structure, bringing the library into the 21st century with technologies – and space – it couldn't previously offer, as well as making it handicapped-accessible. She said the project, which has been at least a five-year process from the planning stages, will hopefully be done by early next year. Though the library has settled in better than she had hoped into its temporary location at 34 West Water St.

"Sometimes you think it's a slow process, but then you look at the level of detail, and it really is wonderful," she said.
