One of New York's oldest volunteer fire departments -and one of the oldest in the country- the Sag Harbor Fire Department has five companies: Gazelle Hose, Montauk Hose, Otter Hose, Murray Hill Hose and Phoenix Hook & Ladder. The department also has a heavy rescue squad, fire police and a dive/water rescue team. Sag Harbor often drills with North Sea, Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton fire departments. The department also sponsors youth soccer teams and offers scholarships to Sag Harbor students. There is an open house every year during fire prevention week, the first or second week of October. The department has a fire museum open between Fourth of July and Labor Day, on the corner of Church Street and Sage Street. The current chief is Wayne Mortensen.
