Tom, you are an articulate spokesman for your cause, and I, too have enjoyed our little debate. IRead More just want to address one comment: I do not look down on the woprkingman. In fact, I do tax returns for many of these folks and a much reduced rate than they would pay elsewhere. It is a sideline for me, and I would not be comfortable ripping people off. I do find, however, an incredible sense of entitlement among the public employees. I would bet that most of these people never worked in the private sector, so they do not understand that their good fortune is due as much to politics as it is hard work. It is a shame that people of lesser means have to pay grossly inflated taxes so that these workers can have their high salaries and benefits.

I have been a Teamster for Organized Labor for many years. I for one have seen the good days when everyone was happy and I have seen the bad days. Meaning right now. I think alot of people get bad thoughts when things are blown out of proportion and taken as a swipe at the public regardless if its the LIRR or the MTA Bus & Train, The Airport Workers, Fast Food workers etc. It seems if any workers disrupt any facet of another workers day, then those people get demonized. Which is a shame because truthfully if people saw the big picture instead of what just annoyed them then I think people would look at issues differently and could empathize a little more with another persons uphill battles so in case it ever happened to them they would have a better understanding of what to do. Again sir, you are a gentleman. I am always open for good conversation and a beer. All the best to you my friend.

Some new news on this front: today's talks in NYC just broke down and the union bosses are tellingRead More members to begin to wind down operations starting July 16th, ahead of the July 20th strike deadline. It's being reported that the bosses have told the members that the presidential panel blessed their offer and the bosses promised that they will accept nothing less. That's not entirely true, however. The presidential panel only chooses among the two "final" offers submitted by each side at the time, which included 11% raises over 6 years by the LIRR. It doesn't mean the panel agrees with the union offer, only that it preferred that offer compared to the LIRR offer of 11% at that time. It's entirely possible given the latest LIRR offer of 17% over 7 years, the panel might choose that one today instead. In addition, word has gotten around political circles about the union bosses promises and many are seriously ticked off at them since those promises painted the bosses into a corner during negotiations. That's why there's a stalemate in the current negotiations, because the bosses can't make any concessions without breaking their promise. If there really is a strike, expect the pols to look to get back at the unions in the future since the bosses are causing too much unnecessary trouble right now.

Mr Wendt re: Intermodal- In the 80's the LIRR started to get some special equipment that would allowRead More for truck trailers to be hooked up to freight engines. I remember that there was at least one place on the "Main" line on a "WYE" in Farmingdale that was equipped with a lifting device that would remove the trailers from these special devices and place on the road (Budwiser and several other companies used them for a while). Though they were not stacked, they did work. The MTA never really pushed this service. The special devices kept the trailers low so the trains made it thry the tunnels. Yes we do not manufacture enough to warrant freight service off the Island but aren't the truck trailers going off island empty anyway. Once there were freight yards on the Island (Westbury, Garden City, Hicksville, Farmingdale and out in Brookhaven to name a few) but in at least two have been converted to shopping centers, and two converted to garbage transfer stations. The MTA even built a freight car repair facility at the old Holban? classification yard, kept it working for two years and then tore it down (used the property to build their big passenger car repair facility).

It is not about blame, Darren. It is about carrying local's books in a "local bookstore thatRead More supports community." And we don't "make up a publisher." We do the work ourselves, with no budget or advance or PR people and get our books out there. We don't talk about writing a novel someday. We write every day. I know you are joking about Bill O'Reilly. It is not always quality that gets published. He is a very well-known antagonistic blow-hard, let's face it. But people are glued to his nightly sermons and they buy his books. He could write about passing wind and they would publish it. But one day no one knew who he was, and he caught a break. No local writers here are asking for a free lunch, just a foot in the door. And it is extremely hard if your name is not famous and it is your first book. Kudos to TJ, a friend who did it and sold books locally. As I did myself. We may not be famous, but we are authors. Maybe this year, we can attend Authors Night at the local library......Alec is busy with his new baby and Gwyneth is going through her own sadness. Might be time to lay low and let the locals shine. Or maybe Kayne and Kimmie wrote a book? Oy.

McMorrow | May 23, 2014 - 9:37am Cyril's Fish House, theRead More popular roadside restaurant on the Napeague stretch, has received the okay to open this weekend, having cleared a legal hurdle today in New York State Supreme Court in Riverhead when acting Supreme Court Justice Joseph Farneti lifted a temporary restraining order that would have required the restaurant to operate in conformance to its layout in the mid 1980s, when the establishment was much smaller. According to Justice Farneti, the owners of the restaurant had remedied conditions that had posed "imminent danger" to the public that first caused him to issue restraining order on April 12. However, he also fast-tracked the town's lawsuit against the restaurant for operating an illegally expanded business by setting a June 9 date for a hearing. His action followed the lifting of the stop work order that Tom Preiato, the town's chief building inspector, had imposed on work being done on the front brick patio and dry bar in January. The patio had been pulled up and the bar moved to allow for the removal of two 2,000-gallon underground gasoline storage tanks dating back many years to when the spot was a gas station. Mr. Preiato said at the time that the owners had not obtained permits for any of the work. On Wednesday, Mr. Preiato said he had lifted the order the day before with the understanding that the bricks would be replaced by clean local gravel. He also said the needed permits for the removal of the tanks had been obtained by the owners. Work has been going on at the restaurant since yesterday. The bricks have been moved from the front area. There is now a level surface of gravel, where the front patio had been. A tanker from Quackenbush Cesspools was pumping out the restaurant's septic system this morning. John Fairchild, the restaurant's manager, was overheard talking on his cellphone during a recess at Supreme Court today, urging work to continue on the restaurant, hopeful that it could open tomorrow. While the restaurant has not yet received its assembly permit, Dianne K. Le Verrier of Jordan and Le Verrier, the restaurant's attorney, said that Joseph Prokop, the town's attorney, had given her a verbal assurance that it would be issued in time for its opening tomorrow.
