The Southampton Fire District was created by the Southampton Town Board in 2003 to negotiate fire protection for the hamlets of Tuckahoe, Water Mill and Shinnecock Hills and the Shinnecock Indian Reservation — approximately 16 square miles. A board of commissioners negotiates a fire protection contract with the Southampton Village Board, which overseas the Southampton Fire Department. The Southampton Fire District Board of Commissioners, which is also charged with ensuring the district's hydrants and deep wells as maintained, holds public meetings on the second Thursday of the month at the Tuckahoe School.
