Weird News: The Getaway Cart And How the Letter 'E' Can Cost You on Jeopardy

Some stories are downright strange. Here's our wrap-up from around Suffolk County.

As a local news organization, Patch covers stories of all kinds, from heartbreaking tragedies to inspiring tales of community brotherhood. But some stories are just plain weird. Here are some of the stranger headlines from the past seven days.

Now That’s a Getaway

Police say a woman shopping at Target rode away in a motorized cart she stole from the Commack store.

According to Target’s video footage, the woman drove the shopping cart out of the store and into the parking lot of the Target store, located at 98 Veterans Memorial Highway, Sept. 26 at approximately 2 p.m. The suspect is described as white, in her late 20s to early 30s, with long blonde hair past her shoulders. She was wearing a zippered hoodie, a dark hat and sunglasses.

Long E Costs Port Jefferson Man on Jeopardy

A Port Jeff Station man who competed on the quiz show 'Jeopardy' last week was dinged for what the show said was a mispronunciation of Elaine, a character from Seinfeld.

Fidelito Cortes, who was playing under the category, 'Name That TV Role', was given the answer "'Seinfeld': Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Cortes answered "Elaine", but apparently his use of a short "E" in the pronunciation and not a long "E" caused judges to say he was incorrect.

"It was EE-laine, not UH-laine, Fidelito,"said host Alex Trebek to Cortes. "That's why the judges ruled against you on that one."

This could be a Seinfeld episode.

Zombies To Take Over Library

On Oct. 26, zombies will be taking over the Westhampton Free Library, located on Library Avenue in Westhampton Beach.

The Teen Services Department at the library said the zombies have already started to arrive (see attached video), but they will fully take over the library from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 26 during a new program, called "Zombie Library."

Teens, ages 12 to 18, are invited to help fight off the zombies and take back the library.
