Shelter Dogs and Walkers Stroll Southampton Streets

Southampton Animal Shelter volunteers show off adoptable dogs.

Dogs and their walkers, sporting matching vests, explored downtown Southampton Village Thursday, attracting dog lovers to come pet the shelter animals and possibly consider adopting one.

The three dogs taken out and about on Thursday are residents of the in Hampton Bays.

Sonja, a 9-year-old German shepard-Siberian husky mix, came to the shelter when her owner died. Her walker, shelter volunteer Jane Raynor, said Sonja is a very well-behaved dog.

Boo, a shih tzu and poodle mix, was a stray. The shelter staff think he is about 1 year and 5 months old. "He's just wonderful," said Boo's walker, volunteer coordinator Regina Martini. "He just loves people."

Lottie, a 1-year-old pit bull terrier mix, was also a stray. She came to the shelter in late May. "She loves to give kisses," her walker, volunteer Carol Bauhs, said.

"She loves to have her belly rubbed," Martini added.

Coming up on July 16, the shelter is hosting its second annual benefit, "." The event, at the Southampton Village home of Ellen and Chuck Scarborough, will honor Karen LeFrak. Tickets are $250.
