Why Are 8 East Enders heard on WPKN 89.5 FM from Connecticut? It's Freedom Baby

WPKN is listener supported radio.

Listener supported WPKN 89.5 FM is a free form volunteer staffed and listener supported station.  Since the mid-'80s it has been independent and owned by a nonprofit group composed of members of its staff.  There is only one full-time and one part-time paid employee.

What goes on air is decided by the programmers.  Here are some examples:

On Wednesday at 7:30 PM Tidings from Hazel Kahan comes from Lahore Pakistan and features classical and pop musicians performing and talking about their art. Hazel normally hangs her hat in Mattituck and talks on-air to people all over the globe.

On Thursday at noon Sustainable East End  features 'Green Architect' Bill Chaleff of East Hampton talking about energy efficient housing for the 99%, zoning laws that have destroyed what was once prime agricultural land, how to fix our polluted bay waters and restore the fishing industry and more. This monthly program is produced by Francesca Rheannon of Springs and Tony Ernst of Southampton.

Other programmers from these parts are singer songwriter Caroline Doctorow whose Songtrails airs on the first Saturday each month at 7PM; Malcolm C. Dankner of Southampton who presents Jazz and Standards each Tuesday from 1 to 4PM. This week Mal features interviews with musician friends of the late vibraphonist Teddy Charles — and a jam session recorded in Greenport last month.

' Kathryn Szoka of Sag Harbor presents the Eastern Long Island Arts Calendar heard at various times during the week. This and all WPKN programs are available streaming online and archived at wpkn.org

Also Francesca Rheannon also hosts another show that airs on WPKN on Monday nights at 10 -- Writers Voice: a weekly show of in-depth conversation with writers of all genres. Local writers like Philip Schultz, Ted Rall and David S. Reynolds have been guests on the show. Find the current and archived shows at http://www.writersvoice.net/

and, shows are ARCHIVED in the WPKN Archives. I host CONNECTICUT ROCKS! on WPKN with more than 500 hours of CT indie orginal music on WPKN since CT ROCKS! started in November 2009. If there is interest, I am considering doing a LONG ISLAND ROLLS show / segment ... that is, if there are LI indie original bands / musicians with recordings to submit to the show ... connect :: connecticutrocks@gmail.com

I live on the North Fork and I want everyone to know that I can get WPKN's 89.5 signal all the way from the Greenport to around exIt 60 on the LIE. Not sure what the picture is on the South Fork but I guess nobody knows until they set their dial to 89.5 fm. I hope Tony's blog will encourage you all to tune in. Once you do that, I believe you'll stay tuned. WPKN is a terrific and unusual radio station.

WPKN has the best programming broadcast to the East End today. It's "non-NPR" format is unique among radio stations that have all sold out to NPR, becoming simply a re-broadcaster of NPR programs that can be heard anywhere nationwide. They're certainly good, but WPKN has broken away and done so successfully. Give them a listen and you'll be as delighted as I was to hear a great mix of music as well as wonderful and inspiring people like Bill Chaleff.

What amazing content and musical variety. Tony, thank you for being so much a part of WPKN's broadcasts to our area.
Tony Ernst May 10, 2012 at 10:44 PM
actually it's WPKN's broadcast FROM our area ... by our neighbors in East Hampton (Henry Letcher and Francesca Rheannon), Mattituck (Hazel Kahan), New Suffolk (Howard Thompson), Bridgehampton (Caroline Doctorow), Sag Harbor (Kathryn Szoka) and Southampton (Mal Dankner and myself) ... and more coming soon! ... and you?

Maybe Mr. Blaugh could be convinced to do a piece on our local environment and similar topics. He's a good speaker and would probably be an excellent host.
