Southampton Town at Crossroads in 2014

2014 will be a huge year for Southampton Town. In just this first year, decades of Republican rule and perhaps cronyism will have to be dealt with head on. With the local economy layered in its recovery many residents are still struggling even while they are working their tails off.

The super rich are a factor in the town and how they support the new board will become apparent by mid summer. Police contracts, town employee health care and pay increases will have to be approached within the new parameters of new state property tax mandates. Yet as cost go up, so must income somehow.

Perhaps the hugest challenge for Southampton Town might just be to determine if it wants to grow via new shopping centers, home building, and commercial zoning or fortify a desire to become a tear round retirement community with everything as is. This is where the Democratic leadership will have its toughest time. Every Town Board decision now will be theirs and so will the responsibility of how the budget effects every resident.

I look forward hoping the change will be for the best, otherwise the Republicans will once again rule for 20 years.
