McDowell Shines at Monika Olko Gallery with New Works

Friday's opening night was a success!

At the Monika Olko Gallery in Sag Harbor, for the next two weeks the works of Michael McDowell will be shown in a special exhibition featuring some new works.

A Californian schooled artist, McDowell was influenced by the San Francisco Bay Area figurative painters, such as Paul Wonner, Wayne Thiebaud, and Richard Diebenkorn who boldly used shapes, colors and motion to create a distinct feel.

Throughout the years he has been commissioned on both coasts to create paintings for knowledgeable art collectors. Painting almost 35 years in the Hamptons, Michael has been influenced by the brilliant light, shapes, and forms that are the essence of the area. His works are not narrow in scope but seem to have a consistent tone that draws the viewer into the painting. His view of his talent is that he was born to create this genre of art.

It is what he does. He is an oil painter who some have called a genius with color, using the full spectrum of light defined by a unique grasp of how colors should engage each other. Michael says, “In nature light is color and in painting color makes light.” This defines the philosophy of his approach to painting.

His wife, Judy Lynn-McDowell calls him, “an artist’s artist. Because he is a purest he does art for art’s sake and it’s who he is.”

Michael agrees adding, “I am lucky to know that this is my passion.” This is the second year that Monika Olko has used her gallery to bring to Sag Harbor an eclectic group of cutting edge master artists to present their works to be seen and sold.

She told me she loves the excitement of the process of showcasing the genius of so many local artists to the sophisticated east end. I attended opening night and was fascinated by the attention grabbing themes the canvasses had that drew in my total focus on form, color, movement, texture and composition. Having had the opportunity to play some tennis with Michael McDowell his precise shot making skills always amazed me. But it is his vision that he puts on canvass that amazes everyone. A hard living modest and gifted son of a Californian doctor, Michael’s attention to the emotion of his subjects will bring emotion to you as a viewer go check it out.

Monika Olko Gallery is located on 95 Main Street, Sag Harbor.
