20 Snowstorm Safety Tips to Review

I used to spend a lot of time in areas of big snowstorms. Here are some tips.

1- Have all the cars filled with gas

2- Know where all flashlight are and have new batteries.

3- Keep cell phones charged and have car chargers.

4- Because you may lose heat via electrical outage have all sleeping bags, cleaned and available, stay aware of water pipes.

5- Have lots of good soups (I don't know why but soup tastes best during big storms lol)

6- Stock up on fresh water, fruits and things like power bars.

7- Park your car close to the road facing toward the road if it needs to be pushed onto out of a snow drift. check your windshield-wiper fluid, and some like to extend the wipes upward. Keep a small shovel in the car trunk.

8- Have best winter boots , winter gloves, and snow suits near the front door.

9- Have lots of DVD's movies in case the cable goes out.

10- Have a good radio and watch some news 12 long Island for area weather, news.

11- Check out the location of the snow shovels, rock salt, and make sure they're ready. Moving them closer to the front door, is better than leaving them in sheds in other spots on the property.

12- Have cash....$$$$$... go to a bank and ATM and have a few hundred in cash, Power outages no ATM's and in case of an emergency (it will be a weekend storm) cash is king.

13- Shovel show every 4" so that it never becomes ridiculous....never over do it, take it easy. Make sure if you take mediacations you have them current.

14- Make sure you have ample supply of coffee, hot cocoa, and tea... perhaps wine and some brandy lol...if you smoke have smokes.And chocolate bars taste best during snow storms and are helpful. Remember to wear poly/wool/synthetic socks and undergarments, in cold wet weather, "cotton kills."

15- Have cross country skis available as well as sleds and so forth for the kids.

16- A nice book, a good link to SouthamptonPatch.com and bring in lots of wood for the fireplaces if you have them. make sure you have fire-starter and newspapers to light the fire.

17- Also check he fluids in your car, especially oil and radiator fluid.

18- Check your tire tread, have chains if you think the car may need it.

19- If you have Four Wheel Drive, practice using it, make sure it is working should you now really need it.

20- Make sure you have matches, and keep flashlights at known spots around the house.
