PHOTOS: Fireworks Light the Sky Over Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor Yacht Club puts on annual fireworks show.

A great big THANK YOU! goes out to the for their awe inspiring gift of more than 10 years providing fireworks to the village of Sag Harbor, all of its neighbors in North Haven, Shelter Island, Noyac, East Hampton, all of the people on boats in the marina from points near and far and everyone else who had the pleasure of celebrating our Independence. As the harbor sky lit up, all of the "ohs" and "ahs" from the delighted, young and old, seemed to bring to mind the lyrics of Francis Scott Key’s National Anthem, ”the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air…”

The gift of fireworks to village of Sag Harbor was the brainchild of the late John Ward. If you need to recall the many contributions of John Ward to Sag Harbor see his . Ward’s long-time affiliation with the Sag Harbor Yacht Club and the huge group effort of its directors and members have made this a Sag Harbor Village tradition.

The fireworks were provided by Legion Fireworks of Wappinger Falls, N.Y.  All of the expenses, logistics, permits and approvals were the hard work of the SHYC. Typically arranging the show is complicated enough by the transportation of the fireworks, getting them loaded onto the barge, navigating through the busy water traffic summer brings to the harbor but, this year, there was the added concern of coordinating with the new water ferry between Greenport and Sag Harbor.
