FOOTPRINTS

Footprints say it all—that is when you can see them! They tell a story, not only of where you have been but where everything around you has been.

Call me curious, but I want to know the story of my food. From how it is grown or raised to what’s really going down during processing. It’s called transparency and I seek it and talk about it a lot! So do many of my colleagues and rightly concerned citizens.

But hey, I get that you want to trust all you eat. And that you want to believe that food companies and the US Government truly give a rats ass about the safety of your food. It’s much easier and far less work for you—who needs more to do? Sometimes I wish knowing food in the way that I do wasn’t my 24/7 365 day per year calling—it can be a real burden to carry.

So when you are channeled into crap like this daily and it is your job to delicately deliver details to your clients, students, readers and listeners about a food system gone awry with hopes of informing, inspiring and motivating, sometimes you need a darn walk on the beach with your dog. And then you see those freakin’ footprints in the sand and it starts all over again in your head (or my head I should say).

Last week I drowned you in a list of organizations that are truly on your side. And this week, get to know some of the labels on your food—what they mean and who is behind them. Thanks to GRACE Communications and their Sustainable Table program, this info can be at your fingertips!

Forget the hyped up claims on your package of food, like Rice Krispies boost immunity (do you really think a highly processed cereal has anything do to with supporting a strong immune system?) and tune into the labels that don’t lie. They will help tell the story of your food.

And, don’t forget to tune in to Stirring the Pot on WPPB 88.3 FM Thursdays at 5:30pm (with an encore Saturdays at 5pm) for Follow the Frog and surely check out the Weekly Yum Recipe.
