Sag Harbor Native Drafted into Major League Baseball

Kyle McGowin drafted in the fifth-round on Friday.

Kyle McGowin saw his dream realized Friday when he was drafted into Major League Baseball.

The 21-year-old right-handed pitcher, who gained attention this season as a draft prospect, is headed to the West Coast. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim selected McGowin, a Savannah State student, with their fourth pick in the 2013 MLB Draft.

The Mid-East Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year was picked in the fifth round, 159th overall.

"We are so excited," said McGowin's mother, Stacy McGowin. "We were waiting for the call from a team and it was on TV first so it was a shock when his name popped up."

The family plans to celebrate Friday night at La Superica in Sag Harbor.

McGowin finished his college season for the Tigers with a 12-2 record, 2.02 earned run average and a school single-season record of 135 strikeouts in 120 innings pitched. The Tigers made their way to the College World Series earlier this year, but were bounced in the regional round, losing to Florida State and Alabama.
