Sag Harbor Native Awaits Word on MLB Draft Dreams

With rounds 3 through 10 of the MLB draft taking place Friday, and the remainder concluding Saturday, Kyle McGowin is waiting for the big call.

Lots of kids dream of playing big league baseball. Sag Harbor native Kyle McGowin might just see that dream start to take shape in the next couple of days.

The 21-year-old Savannah State right-handed pitcher has gained attention this season as a draft prospect and with Friday marking the second day of the Major League Baseball draft, the Mid-East Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year could be on his way.

"I'm excited - it's been a life long dream and it's obviously gonna be an amazing thing to finally live it," he said, adding that he's back in Sag Harbor for the draft to be with family.

McGowin finished the college season for the Tigers with a 12-2 record, 2.02 earned run average and a school single-season record of 135 strikeouts in 120 innings pitched. The Tigers made their way to the College World Series earlier this year, but were bounced in the regional round, losing to Florida State and Alabama.

As for McGowin, he said he has fielded interest from all clubs entering the draft – which resumes at 12:30 p.m. on Friday – and particularly the Mariners, Royals, Rangers and Blue Jays.

While the Yankee fan, who previously pitched for the Sag Harbor Whalers in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, would love the chance to wear pinstripes, he added that "I'm happy to be with anyone who gives me the opportunity."

Rounds 3 through 10 will be held on Friday, with 11-40 on Saturday. http://easthampton.patch.com/groups/sports/p/kyle-mcgowin
