North Beats East in Cross-Town Lacrosse Battle

Boys teams battle for third time in school history.

Sachem vs. Sachem rivalry games have occurred consistently for the past seven years since the split occurred. In boys lacrosse, however, the schools only met twice prior to Monday’s game.

In each of the two previous contests East had the upper hand, but North, ranked No. 24 in the nation and No. 7 in New York, has one of the better teams on Long Island this time around and it showed after a 15-6 win at Sachem East.

“It’s always tough when you have to play a rivalry game and I thought our boys came to play," said Sachem North coach Jay Mauro. "A win is a win in Suffolk County Division I. ”

North (7-1 overall, 6-1 Division I) put six goals on the board in the first 5:30 of the game and stuck with the commanding lead for the remainder of the contest.

East (1-5, 1-6), who had six different goal scorers, managed to score three times in the first quarter to keep the score at 8-3 after one.

"We told our kids to settle in and get the jitters out," said Sachem East coach Rob Murphy. "For awhile we played even. We were a little outmatched at times."

The game’s pace slowed in the second with North’s offensive juice coming from goals by Brandon Gamblin and Michael Andreassi, who each scored three in the game. North led 10-4 at half.

Dalton Crossan, who led both teams with four goals, scored his third and fourth in the second half.

Eric Martin and John Vigh scored three minutes apart at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters, respectively, for East’s final offensive stats.

"I don't think we played physical enough the way we should have," Murphy said. "We're in the toughest division probably in the United States here. We're not a bad team and they're a really good team."

North plays Hills East in a scrimmage on April 20 and hosts Smithtown West in a highly anticipated Division I match-up April 27. East will host Bayport in a non-league game April 23.
