Great Start For Breakers

Southampton opens Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League season 2-0.

The Southampton Breakers began the with back-to-back wins last weekend, defeating the Westhampton Aviators 3-1 on June 4 and edging the Sag Harbor Whalers 3-2 on June 5.

In their season-opening victory over Westhampton at , Breakers starting pitcher David Speer was solid if not spectacular on the mound, allowing seven hits over six innings while showing excellent control in the strike zone by issuing only one walk. He also mixed in four strikeouts and when he left the game at the top of the seventh inning, Southampton’s bullpen proved to be equally effective.

Anthony Eichorn pitched the seventh and eighth innings, walking two and striking out two while allowing one hit before Tim Swatek entered the game in the top of the ninth inning to close out the win. Swatek struck out two batters and did not allow a hit to pick up the save.

Southampton scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning when third baseman James McMahon walked, advanced to second and scored on an error, and Stuart Turner, who had reached base on the error, scored after outfielder Steve Schrenk poked an RBI single through the infield to put Southampton ahead 2-1.

Westhampton starting pitcher Joe Lombardo took the loss, but deserved a better fate after holding the Breakers to four hits over six innings and both runs he allowed were unearned. Lombardo walked two batters and struck out six. Chris Brook, the Aviators starting first baseman, had two hits in the game to lead all players and third baseman Aaron Cohn produced an RBI single in the top of the second inning to give Westhampton a 1-0 lead.

In their win at Sag Harbor Sunday, Southampton once again took comfort in the reliability of its pitchers to produce outs, as Rafael Guerrero took the mound in his first start of the season and allowed two hits, one walk and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts in five innings before giving way to teammate Mike Campbell. Campbell (four strikeouts) pitched the next four shutout innings, picking up the victory after allowing only two hits and one walk.

The Breakers (2-0), playing at Sag Harbor’s home field , took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Turner delivered a two-run double. Sag Harbor tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning after an RBI single off the bat of Ryan Kresky and J.J. Franco drew a bases-loaded RBI walk.

Tito Marrero, starting at first base for Southampton, scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning after reaching on an error and scoring on a passed ball by the Whalers catcher.

Southampton hosts Riverhead Monday at Stony Brook Southampton at 5 p.m., and plays another home game against defending HCBL champion North Fork on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
