Shoot Some Hoops for Lt. Theinert Scholarship Fund

Second annual three-on-three tournament to benefit Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Scholarship Fund.

The second annual three-on-three basketball tournament will be held at the Shelter Island School on Nov. 26 to honor U.S. Army 1st Lt. Joseph J. Theinert of Shelter Island, who died last June 4 while on foot patrol in Afghanistan.

The Lt. Joseph J. Theinert 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament raises money and awareness for the Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Scholarship fund. This scholarship is awarded annually to students at Shelter Island High School, Mattituck High School, SUNY Albany, Siena College and Valley Forge Military College.

Theresa Power, a returning competitor on the court and a close friend to Lt. Theinert, said, “Joe never failed to represent leadership by doing the right thing without cause for compliment. He simply led by example.” While the tournament is competition, the goal will be to honor Lt. Theinert, number 15 on the court and a valued Shelter Island varsity player during his career at Shelter Island High School.

Each participating team will have a minimum of four players and a maximum of six. Each team must have one high school student, and one female. While there are some rivalries between returning teams looking to regain the championship trophy, this year’s line-up is looking to be more exciting than a professional game.

While there is no admission to be a spectator, concession food will be offered and raffle prizes include gift certificates to Sweet Tomato’s on Shelter Island, The Lunch Truck at The North Fork Table and Inn, a one year membership to the Children’s Museum of the East End, among a long list of prizes.

Registration is open and available until Friday. To check out the competition, register, donate or volunteer please visit www.lttheinert3on3.com.
