Southampton Students Participate in Celebration of Technology in Education

Students and teachers representing SES and SIS traveled on Friday, May 11, to take part in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES 12th Annual Celebration of Technology in Education.

Students and teachers representing and traveled to Shirley with Mrs. Julieanne Purcell, Director of Instructional Technology, on Friday, May 11, to take part in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES 12th Annual Celebration of Technology in Education with the goal to provide "live" demonstrations of technology they are using on an everyday basis. Held in the aircraft hangar at the Dowling College School of Aviation, the celebration provided a place for the students and teachers from across the region to display and share their learning with each other in an interactive setting.  

Ms. Karen Raynor’s 4th Grade students presented “Expert Writing: Creating Electronic Books.” The students created electronic books about a topic they were an expert in as a part of their exploration of the features of nonfiction writing.  Using Microsoft PowerPoint, the students went through the writing process to create their books, which were then published to the classroom’s website’s digital portfolio.  

As a way to develop a better understanding of the 8 Healthy Habits as introduced by Jill Jane, Rock Star Nutritionist, Mrs. Mei-Lynn Guerrero and Mrs. Cindy Corwith asked students at SIS to create digital posters using MS Publisher and PSA commercials using either Windows Movie Maker or iMovie as a part of a project entitled, “Healthy Children Healthy Futures.”  By using the technology, students were able to articulate the importance of making healthy food choices, incorporating physical activity and limiting screen time in their life.  Click here to visit the project’s website.

Sixth grade students from were on hand to demonstrate how to utilize an iPad to do classwork, reading, homework, note-taking, and collaboration in their presentation, “iPads in the Sixth Grade Classroom.” The students were prepared to present their work from the classrooms of Mrs. Jennifer Comber, Ms. Colleen Ferran, Mrs. Marion Tanner, and Mrs. Jessica Zukoski.

“Mi Futuro - My Future” was presented by Mrs. Kristen Minter’s students to demonstrate how sharing their dreams, hopes, and inspirations for their future to create a web page increased their understanding of the use of the future, conditional and present tenses in the Spanish language.

Students took turns manning the ’s booths and had the opportunity to share their projects with the teachers and students who were drawn to visit their displays. When not speaking about their projects, they had the chance to make their way around the hangar to see other school’s technology projects in action.

The following 4th grade students participated: Emeli Alfaro, Grace Middlekauf, Sarah Eckert, Marco Gonzalez, Julien Putmon, Johanna Rishel, Juan Serrano, Sam Suttmeier, Remi Wesnofske, Logan Whitall, Nicholas Castillo, Sara Morastitla, Sydney Miller, Avery Owen, Evie Purcell, Brian Solano, Juliana Stein, Isabella Valdespino, and Caroline Wetter.

Janet Amador, Hope Brindle, Alexandra Dudley, Angel Guevara Rojano, Caitlyn Kreymborg, Christina Lin, Keizha Mabulay, Deion Minter, Andrew Mosolino, Jack Motz, Amira Nation, David Nichols, James O’Brien, Saul Ochoa Rojano, James Rice, Francisco Rojas, James Ryan, Krystal Santiago, Pablo Serrano, Abigail Wesnofske, and Frederika Whitall represented the 6th Grade.

Seventh graders Hallie Della-Volpe, Caleigh Kiembock, Susannah Knoebel, and Charlotte Ramgopal presented, as well.
