Lady Mariners Win Scholar/Athlete Team Award

Proving that they are the epitome of scholar athletes, the Southampton High School Lady Mariners Basketball team with a Long Island Championship and a NYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete Team Award.

Proving that they are the epitome of scholar athletes, the Lady Mariners basketball team not only ended their season with a Long Island Championship, but with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association's (NYSPHSAA) Scholar/Athlete Team Award, as well.

At the end of each sport season, NYSPHSAA honors teams that excel in the classroom with the award to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement by varsity level student athletes.  In order to be considered for the award, the submitted team's average for the time period of the season had to be at least 90 or above.  Seven members of the varsity team (including all six starters) qualified to be included.  "I think it shows the level of commitment of those girls on and off the court," says Assistant Coach Diane Guida.

A total of 12 AP courses are taken between the seven team members and Coach Guida noted that even though NYSPHSAA does not weight the averages submitted, "I think it makes this award even more meaningful."
