Property Manager Says Clients Want Someone To Treat Property as Their Own

Stephen Hesler says through his small business he can take his time and not rush through a job.

Stephen Hesler, the owner of Hamptons Painting and Property Management, has been in the painting business for 30 years, and after 22 years in a paint store, he decided to start his own business three years ago. However, he expanded upon his business to offer clients he built a relationship with the security of knowing their house is being looked after even when they aren't there. Through the property management side of the business, he also gets properties ready for inspections before a sale, arranges for contractors, and helps clean out houses that are being sold.

Hesler told us more about his small business this week: 

What does your company offer? 

Interior/exterior painting, staining, power washing, small carpentry, handy man services, pool maintenance/repair, pool liner installation, complete property management.

What made you start your own business?

I have been on the inside of the business for so many years I decided to start using my knowledge of products and information for my own success.  Since I have been on my own I realize that people just want someone to treat their property as if it was their own, so with that I take pride in every job that I do and make sure it is the best it can be.

How your business has changed?

My original business consisted of interior painting and with references from previous clients I have now been doing small carpentry to painting entire exterior as well. I have found that my business has grown with the recommendation of previous clients. Advertising is important, but the reference from someone who praises the work you do goes a lot farther.

What's the biggest challenge with competing with bigger companies?

When you have a large company doing the business a lot of time they want to finish the job quickly and move on to the next.  Where as with a smaller company, as myself, the pace may be a little smaller but the quality of work is better. I can take my time and not rush.  There are so many painting companies out in the East End and even more that come from up west.

What are you most proud of with your business?  

Being able to create the vision that someone has with their home and make it a reality.  A lot of times a client will come to me and not know the color to use, so I am able to input my own opinion and show them different options that they may not be aware of.  For my clients who are part-time residents here in the Hamptons they can rest assure that their home is taken care of in the off months knowing that Hamptons Painting and Property Management is there for them 24/7.
