Zahn Appointed Interim High School Principal

Southampton Elementary School assistant principal will move to High School as search is conducted for permanent principal.

After consulting with an educational leadership search firm that says there is not sufficient time to find a permanent new principal for before the start of the new school year in the fall, the Southampton School Board is appointing the assistant principal to fill the post on an interim basis.

Dr. Brian Zahn will replace current High School Principal Dr. Tim Mundell, who is stepping down to pursue a job as a superintendent or assistant superintendent elsewhere, according to a statement from School Board President David Dubin and Superintendent J. Richard Boyes, Ed.D.

"We are appointing Dr. Brian Zahn at this time to assure continuity of leadership as planning for next year gets underway," the statement reads. "We have a great deal of confidence in Dr. Zahn. We will assess the interim appointment, and if it portends continuing success, the Board of Education may elect to appoint Dr. Zahn to a regular probationary appointment and drop the external search plan that is ready for later Fall 2012."

Zahn's appointment will take effect July 1. The School Board is starting a search, from both within and outside the district, for an interim Elementary School assistant principal.

Mundell joined the district in 2010 to replace Adam Fine, who left to become principal of East Hampton High School. Fine was principal in Southampton for two school years after replacing Nick Dyno, who was promoted to assistant superintendent.
