Workshops Offered for Young Writers

Professional writers mentor high school students.

High School students have until June 17 to apply for Young American Writers Project workshops in creative writing and screen writing this July at .

The workshops pair professional writers with high school students for four- and five-day retreats culminating in final readings. Select pieces of student work may be eligible for publication in the YAWP E-zine.

The workshops are offered through the Southampton Writers Conference, created and sponsored by Stony Brook Southampton's MFA Writing and Literature program. “The Young American Writers Project is dedicated to mentoring middle and high school students in the development of creative expression and critical thinking through writing,” a YAWP statement reads.

The YAWP Creative Writing Workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 5 – July 8. Student writers in fiction, poetry and essay will discover new ways to explore their ideas and have them heard. By week’s end, students will have several pieces of completed work to submit or publish. On the final day, they participate in a reading of their work at the 2011 Summer Writing Conference.  The course fee for the Creative Writing Workshop is $525.

The YAWP Scriptwriting Workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 11 to July 15.  The workshop encompasses five days of concentrated writing, during which each student creates a short, two-character script for stage or screen. The final day is devoted to a rehearsed reading of students’ work at the 2011 Summer Writing Conference.  The course fee for the Scriptwriting Workshop is $575.
