Whiz Kid: Southampton Student Tries New Things and Succeeds
Zach Malone named Southampton Patch Whiz Kid this week because he overcame his fear and took the stage as the lead in the high school musical production.

Key to Awesomeness: Zach Malone landed the lead role in the musical production of "" after only one year of theater experience at Southampton High School.
He had participated in productions, but when he came to the high school the stage was so huge that he was intimidated and scared. For the first two years of his high school career, he did not try-out.

Somehow, his junior year, he was wrangled into participating. They told him he could try it for a week and drop out if he liked. But he stayed landed the lead role the following year.
Everyone in the production put a lot of work in. They were practicing at least 12 hours a week, from the end of winter break in January to the middle of February when the play debuted. They only had a little more than a month to practice together.
Malone said the play succeeded because there was a lot of positive energy from the cast, teachers and everyone.
He not only tried something new in the theater department but athletically as well. This year he participated in varsity cross-country track for the first time, as a senior.
He also expects to step up as a leader on the Mariners lacrosse team. He believes all seniors should take a leadership role. “You got to put yourself out there and be willing to take risks,” he said.
