Local Parents React To Common Core

We asked readers what they like least about Common Core; share your thoughts on our new open blog.

At recent forums and school board meetings across the state, parents and educators have slammed Common Core.

A total of 45 states, including New York, have adopted the Common Core Standards Initiative, which focus on the subjects of math and English language arts.

From the difficulty and rigor of the work to the effects it is having on both students and teachers, Common Core is huge topic of debate at the moment. With that in mind, we asked readers on our Facebook pages what they like least about Common Core.

Here's a few of the responses:

Candaloo Gonzalez Where to begin? The standards are 1. developmentally inappropriate 2. not been proven to get our children "college and career ready" 3. were not developed by experts in their field 4. Have no provisions for special needs students or accelerated students (one sized-fits all).

Jeff Carlson Anything that resembles "central planning" is unamerican.

Jennifer Giannone ...The modules are developmentally inappropriate and include lessons such as first grade students learning about Mesopotamia, lessons with a suggested teach time of 120 minutes in math for second graders etc. What every teacher, doctor, and parent knows about child development has been ignored.

Michael Hershkowitz There's nothing wrong with establishing a national standard of learning, but to implement a test based achievement in one year and use funding as a penalty is incredibly ill-conceived.

Donna Rossi 1-Our children are not common 2- Data Mining 3-Over testing 4- Can not standardize children- not all children think the same and that is what they are trying to do...Commie Core!!! They don't even teach cursive writing anymore!! Our children are more than a test score and to throw a bone at us saying they are gonna take away the 8th grade math test is not gonna work!

Michele Favaro Parents and educators are seeing that the Common Core is not just a way to help states that had less than stellar public education systems rise to meet those states with great systems- it is about a corporate response to public education. It is about making money and seizing an opportunity for control and power. The idea of basic skill sets at each grade level is not the problem. There should be some set of standards. But FORCING every district to data mine, holding our budgets hostage over CC implementations, excessive/non-age appropriate testing and taking the love of learning out of education is wrong for our teachers, children and education system.

Melissa CV They wert not created by educators with experience

John Zambriski Cc will not allow for next generation innovators. They will be robots..

Hannah Moran Bissell Too much information at too young an age. The requirements being set are forcing these kids to learn so much so young that all they can do is memorize and regurgitate.

Christine Duggan I don't like the extreme stress it is putting on teachers and children. Teachers are forced to teach modules exactly as they are written within a specific time frame.
