Southampton Schools Offer Summer Enrichment Programs

Students entering kindergarten through ninth grade can join workshops.

 

Southampton School District is offering a variety of summer programs in the fields of music, science, athletics, arts, cooking and baking, Latin American games, woodworking and technology and S.T.A.R., Social Thinking and Reasoning.

Registration forms must be returned to the receptionist no later than June 13.

Summer Music – Rock 'n' Roll Music and Its History

Grade levels: Entering 6, 7, 8

While playing and performing rock 'n' roll music, students will experience rock 'n' roll roots, the time period and history. Guest soloists and rock 'n' roll performers will be visiting class as well. There will be a concert/demo of the week’s activities on July 1 at 11 a.m. for parents and friends.

Summer Music – The Swing Era of Jazz Music

Grade levels: Entering 6, 7, 8

Swing music with a Latin twist will be played and explored as students experiment with this jazz style. All instrumentalists are invited to attend in grades 6, 7 and 8. Students will have some fun with visiting performers as well. A concert/demo will be held on July 8 at 11 a.m. for all parents and friends. You may want to bring a dancing partner!

American Sign Language

Grade levels: Entering 6, 7, 8

Come and learn American Sign Language. ASL is a fun and wonderful language. During this session, students will focus on the basics of ASL – from the alphabet to conversation, including body language and facial expressions. For a final project the class will sign a song! An enrollment of 15 is necessary for this class to run.

Beach Art

Grade levels: Entering K - 4

Do you have a collection of beautiful shells, rocks, sand and glass from the beach hidden in containers? If you do, then this is the class for you. In this class students will use their beach collections to make fun and useful art projects. Students will learn how to make a treasure box, a picture frame, jewelry, shell critters and much, much more using treasures from the sea. An enrollment of 15 is necessary for this class to run.

Build and Recycle Workshop

Grade levels: Entering K - 4

Build and create projects in a workshop that is good for the Earth. In Build and Recycle Workshop, students will take things that are normally thrown away and build games, toys and other amazing things. Some projects include candle holders, mini-gardens, sun-catchers, musical instruments, bird feeders, party favors, dream catchers and puppets. The three “R’s” reduce, reuse and recycle, are important and students will do all three. This is an ideal workshop for students who like building things, working with their hands and doing crafts. An enrollment of 15 students per session is needed for this class to run.

FLES Spanish Language Program - Primary

The primary goal of this summer enrichment program is to mirror Southampton's Foreign Language in Elementary Schools program delivered during the school year. This extension will reinforce and extend skills learned within the units of study and also provide students with an opportunity to practice and expand upon the listening and speaking objectives taught during the regular school year. The emphasis will be on improving student outcomes of the base program through fun lessons with instructional and practice with the Spanish language. An enrollment of 15 students is needed for this class to run.

Introduction to Cooking and Baking

This course provides a basic introduction to food preparation, meal planning and measuring. Recipes will focus on basic quick breads, breakfast foods, healthy snacking options and simple meals. Students in this class will also have an opportunity to create their own cookbooks. An enrollment of 15 students is needed for this class to run.

Journey Through the Amazing World of Summer Science

Grade levels: Entering 4, 5
Tuition:  $210

Experience Science hands on. Week 1 – Physics Adventures – Learn Newton’s Laws of Motion through fun, activities and experiments. Week 2 – Chemistry is Cool – Learn Chemistry principles through fun experiments! Week 3 – Natural Disasters – Tsunamis, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Earthquakes OH MY! Week 4 – NASA Space Exploration – Study space in a fun way – creating games, moon habitats and more! During Science Camp, at least 30 minutes per session will be spent keeping active. Bring a water bottle and snack. An enrollment of 15 students is needed for this class to run.

Juguemos: Latin American Games

Grade levels: Entering 1, 2

Children will participate in a variety of Latin American games played indoors and outdoors. Children will have their own packets describing the games played so they can share with others. At the end of the four weeks, the children will celebrate with a Pinata that they created while in class. An enrollment of 15 students is necessary for this class to run.

Learn How To Be a Great Athlete

Grade levels: Entering 3, 4, 5, 6

S.T.A.R. Summer Program

Grade levels: Entering K - 8

Social Thinking and Reasoning (S.T.A.R.) is a program involving children in grades K-8, along with high school students employed as counselors. The program teaches skills, designed to improve academic achievement, self-confidence, discipline, and prevention of drug abuse. Program directors Sherrilyn Blakey-Smith and Richard Wingfield are dedicated professionals who have been successfully leading the S.T.A.R. Program for many years. The staff also includes Southampton School District teachers, former high school P.A.L. (Peer Assisted Leadership) participants who are now attending college, and current high school students. S.T.A.R. will serve approximately 250 children. Those who participate in the program will enjoy a variety of activities conducted at the Parrish Art Museum, Rogers Memorial Library and trips to area bay beaches. Time is designated for reading, math, social studies and science skills, specific for different grade levels, as well as arts and crafts, field trips, guest speakers and extended projects.
