Voters Guide: School Budgets, Board Elections

Everything you need to know before voting Tuesday in Southampton, Tuckahoe, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor and Sagaponack.

Competitive races for school board seats in Southampton, Bridgehampton, Tuckahoe and Sag Harbor will be decided on Tuesday.

There is also an uncontested election in Sagaponack, and in all districts the 2012-13 proposed school budgets are on the ballot.

Southampton School District

Two seats are available, one for a full five-year term, and the second for an abridged term of four years. The candidate with the most votes will receive the longer term. There are no incumbents in the race. School Board President David Dubin is not seeking re-election, and former member Amy Pierson stepped down shortly after to take a job with the school district. Voters will also . Total spending will rise 1.74 percent while the tax levy will increase 2.48 percent

Tuckahoe School District

 One seat available, for a three-year term.

Voters will also , representing a 4.40 percent spending increase. Inclusive of collected property taxes and STAR reimbursement from New York State, the tax levy is budgeted to increase 1.99 percent.

The election will take place in the gymnasium May 15 between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Sag Harbor School District

Two seats available, each with a three-year term.

Voters will also . The budget includes a 2.88 spending increase and a 1.94 percent tax levy increase.

Bridgehampton School District

Three seats available, each with a three-year term.

Voters will also decide on a $10.7 million budget. Spending is slated to rise 1.1 percent and the tax levy is budgeted to rise 5.94 percent.

The election and budget vote will take place at the May 15 between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Sagaponack School District

One seat available, for a three-year term.

Joseph Louchheim is the owner and publisher of The Press News Group, which publishes and 27east.com. He is also an ambulance volunteer and a member of the Southampton Rotary Club.

The proposed budget is $1,564,079, a 2.6 percent year-over-year increase. The tax levy is slated to rise 1.85 percent. The estimated tax rate is .3793 per $1,000 of assessed value.
