PHOTOS: Students Recognized for Bag Designs

Southampton, Tuckahoe and Our Lady of the Hamptons classes participate in a design contest for Southampton Village's official reusable bag.

Southampton Advocates for the Village Environment, or SAVE, the "green" advisory committee for the village, turned to local students to come up with the graphic for a reusable bag that promotes Southampton Village as the first municipality in New York State to ban plastic shopping bags.

The finalists and grand prize winner were recognized Saturday during an awards ceremony conducted by Mayor Mark Epley and Trustee Richard Yastrzemski at the .

The six finalists were Juliana Stein of , Abbey Clemente of , Lindsay Wickershan of , Madison O'Connor of , Sophia Guillo of and Monika Santiago of Southampton Elementary School.

Monika, with a heart shaped design that reads byo Bag, as in "Bring your own bag," was the grand prize winner, and everyone in attendence got to take home a blue bag with her logo.
