Police Investigate Sexual Incident in Locker Room Leading to Forfeited Football Game

School district also investigating incident, superintendent says.

Southampton High School’s varsity football team forfeited its last game of the season last week because of an incident in the locker room that is currently under police investigation.

27East reports that two boys on the team held down a third boy and pretended to perform a sexual act on him after practice on Oct. 30. No arrests have been made.

School superintendent Scott Farina told Patch on Wednesday that he is aware that there was a police report filed, and that the school is conducting its own investigation.

"We are interviewing the students, interviewing the coaches and just trying to get all the facts about the incident," Farina said.

Farina said he could not discuss the details of the incident, and asked if he considers it a hazing incident, he said, "I don't know all the facts all just yet. Until I know all the facts of exactly what went on, I don't want to box it into a category of hazing. It certainly could be. It could also be a different type of incident."

The Mariners pulled out of a game against Bishop Mercy-McGann Monarchs on Nov. 1 in connection to disciplinary issues , Farina said at the time."We were not able to safely field a football game," he said.

Administrators are also reviewing the district's locker room supervision policy, which currently says the coaches are in charge of supervising the locker rooms.

"We need to look at the layout of the locker rooms as far as where the coaches' rooms are in relation to where the lockers are. We want to make sure at all times that the players are being supervised," Farina said.

The district issued a comment on the school website last week about the forfeiture.

"We are investigating and have taken preliminary action on an incident that was brought to our attention Thursday regarding the varsity football program. The safety and security of our student population is paramount and we take reports of misconduct seriously," the statement read. "As a district we expect both students and staff to uphold high moral standards and exhibit positive character traits both on and off the field."

Hampton Bays also forfeited a game against Greenport on Friday night, also due to disciplinary issues, according to Hampton Bays School Superintendent Lars Clemensen.

Both he and Farina said the disciplinary actions were not connected.
