Community Meetings Slated Before School Merger Vote

Southampton School District will host "listening tour."

Two meetings will be held in the coming weeks in order to talk to the community about the upcoming straw vote on whether to merge Southampton and Tuckahoe school districts.

The Southampton School District will host the Merger Advisory Vote Community Listening Tour meetings ahead of the Oct. 29 votes, which take place at both schools.

"We invite you to join together with us as a community to converse about the vote and take the opportunity to have your questions answered at one of the following meetings," the district wrote on its Southampton Patch blog

The meetings will be held Oct. 21 at the Southampton Cultural Center at 7 p.m. and Oct. 23 at Rogers Memorial Library at 7 p.m.

A straw vote — a non-binding, advisory vote —  are mandated by State Education Law, and if the majority of voters are in favor of it, only then can a statutory vote take place, according to Southampton School District Superintendent Scott Farina. That final vote will take place, if necessary, on Dec. 5.
