Book, Lecture Shed Light on Southampton College Closing
Former Southampton College professor will deliver a talk on his new book, "Running on Empty: The Rise and Fall of Southampton College, 1963–2005."
John A. Strong, a professor emeritus of Long Island University, examines the history of Southampton College and its downfall in a new book and in a lecture he will deliver next month at the university's Brookville campus.
Strong was a faculty member at the now-defunct Southampton College in Shinnecock Hills, which was sold to Stony Brook University in 2006 for $35 million. The 82-acre campus was rebranded as Stony Brook Southampton. Strong's book, titled "Running on Empty: The Rise and Fall of Southampton College, 1963–2005," includes interviews with faculty, administrators, alumni and staff and is a cautionary tale about a beloved educational institution trying to carry on without an endowment, according to the publisher.
The free lecture is Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. in LIU Post's B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library at 720 Northern Boulevard, Brookville. The event is open to the public. To reserve a seat, email Alexandra.Janvey@liu.edu.
