Bay Street's 'To Kill a Mockingbird' Gets Rave Reviews

The Southampton Press and The Sag Harbor Express give high praise to Literature Live! production.

"" at Sag Harbor's , being staged through Nov. 26, has received two very positive reviews from local newspapers.

The play, abridged to 90 minutes, is being performed as part of Bay Street's Literature Live! series, which is designed with middle and high school students and their teachers in mind. However, as both Dawn Watson of The Press and Annette Hinkle of The Express write, the production will speak to and impress adults as well.

Watson writes, "Skeptics might think that a play too focused on what’s palatable for the tastes of teenagers would be a miss for adult audiences, but they would be sorely mistaken. The show is very, very good."

Hinkle writes that though the play has been abridged, it "still hits the emotional high notes adeptly."

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, "To Kill a Mockingbird," explores race in America, through the eyes of a child. It centers on the trial of a black man accused of raping a white woman. "The plot and characters are loosely based on actual observations made by the author as a child pertaining to an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936," Bay Street's synopsis of the story reads.
