Village Bag Law Takes Effect Sunday

Southampton Village's new bag law takes effect on Sunday. Get a free shopping bag while supplies last.

Southampton Village's will take effect this Sunday.

Shoppers in Southampton Village retail stores will no longer receive single-use plastic shopping bags. Instead, they will be offered an alternative bag made of 100 percent recycled or renewable resources and they'll be encouraged to bring their own bag in the future whenever they shop in the Village.

In fact, that's the theme of the new Village law:  "B. Y. O. Bag".  Southampton Village boutiques and stores will offer smart and stylish reusable bags in support of the new law. Their bags will be made of renewable resources like recycled paper, hemp, flax, linen, cotton and recycled plastics. They'll no longer be made of fossil fuels like oil and gas.

Roger Blaugh and Mackie Finnerty, the co-chairs of Southampton Village's SAVE Committee (Southampton Advocates for the Village Environment), which proposed the bag law that was passed last May, will be at this Saturday and Sunday between noon and 1 PM to give away reusable shopping bags donated by Southampton Village merchants.  If the bag supply lasts beyond the weekend, SAVE committee members will return to other village stores, like Rite Aide and , to hand out more bags on Monday and Tuesday.
