Government Park Shutdown Hits the Hamptons

As you are most probably aware, there's been a selective government shutdown by the Obama Administration.Among those most effected are nature lovers. For example, all the national parks in the US have been shutdown, including such parks as Morton National Wildlife Refuge off Noyac Road. Morton's is especially fun for families and kids because you can experience birds eating out of your hands. On YouTube there's a video of a woodpecker eating out of a man's hand at Morton's.

Is it really that expensive to have a gate opened to untamed wilderness?  Parks are mostly public places that require little to no maintenance on a daily basis. National Geographic posted an article, "National Parks: Shutting Down America's Best Idea," in which it summarized, "The parks are essential to the country's well-being."

If President Obama is attempting to convey the message that "Obama cares," as has been stated along with his healthcare plan, it seems that closing natural parks wasn't the best tactic.

According to the Washington Examiner,  the park shutdown by Obama displays signs of partisan politics. The Examiner article is entitled, "Park Service OKs immigration reform rally on 'closed' National Mall." The immigration reform rally is allowed, but US veterans have been threatened with possible arrest for wanting to visit Washington to simply look at a WWII memorial. If the Obama administration is trying to gain the attention of the public, that it has done. However, many disagree with

President Obama's healthcare law has been challenged and in response he shuts down untamed wilderness and low-maintenance parks where people can experience inspirational moments and healthy encounters with nature. What does this imply?

According to a Rasmussen Report poll  in September, a majority of Americans favored a government shutdown in protest of Obamacare. The response by the Obama administration, shutting down places that the public can enjoy, is an interesting one.

One of the amazing things about Morton National Park is the way that the wild sparrows will come to feed out of your hand if you have bird seed. I still remember the joy of seeing my young children experience nature in this way. At the moment, this little and free pleasure is not possible. As National Geographic pointed out, perhaps after the shutdown of parks has ended there will be more interest in experiencing and treasuring these types of places.

At at a time in the US when many US families are facing economic hardships, having access to parks can be one of the few free recreational possibilities available. The shutdown of parks is not such a  healthy idea and seems to send the wrong message. What are your thoughts on this subject?
