Easy-to-Build, Deer-Proof Hamptons Wall Garden

OK, so you didn't already plant seeds indoors. It's not too late! And there are some easy options for a creative deer-proof wall garden that you can put together at your Hamptons home.

You may be feeling some regret if you haven't already sown some seeds indoors that can be transplanted outside. But it's still not too late to plant some seeds. My wife and I had picked up some organic seeds and were excited about planting them indoors, but time just slipped by and I kept thinking of other issues, such as the lack of light in our wooded yard and the ubiquitous deer who will come right up to the front porch if necessary for a little snack. Today, however, I was inspired by some images of vertical wall gardens on the Internet and there was a sense of hope that I could find a narrow spot near the house with enough direct light that a small vertical wall garden would do well.

First of all, I just don't see the practicality of building a major fenced-in garden bed at our rented home. Plus, this would mean asking the owner if I could cut down a tree or two for sunlight. No. A simple wall garden with a light net net hung over it seems like the most practical solution, and a creative solution as well. Anyway, if you are interested, this almanac link outlines the best planting times for certain seeds in New York. And this link offers images of vertical wall gardens that can offer some inspiration for creating your own version at your home.

The key to making your wall garden deer proof is simple. Just purchase some plant netting or wire mesh and secure it far enough in front of your plant wall so that deer cannot reach the plants. Your garden wall can be as simple as hanging some planters on the side of a wall or it can entail building a freestanding wall. If you have children, then one of the greatest benefits of all this will be to have something interesting that the kids can be involved in.
