Septic Systems And Water Quality On The East End

PIRANA SEPTIC SYSTEM by Raun Norquist Septic systems issues are finally causing a big stink at City Halls of Southampton and East Hampton. These issues encompass everyone, not just you and your next-door neighbors, but all of Suffolk County. Whether you agree or disagree with what have become very contentious issues, as always is the case, it is increasingly probable you will be required, at some point, to spend your hard earned money “improving” the function of your septic system. The question that naturally comes to mind is, “How much money will I have to spend to deal with this crappy situation?”

Water quality concerns for our ponds, bays and even the ocean are forcing action. It is too late to build a sewer system for the entire county. It would cost budget-breaking sums, taking many years to accomplish the actual installation of the necessary infrastructure, creating huge, protracted disruptions and then there is NIMBY, the “not in my back yard”, resistance to locating treatment plants. AND treatment plants present their own problems with concentrating the sewage stream making it more complex and difficult to treat sewage effectively.

Centralized wastewater plants release contaminated water into our environment while producing bio-solids that require disposal somewhere, often in local solid waste land fills, spread over farm land or carted to other states for disposal. This bio-solids issue is a seldom understood and unknown nasty aside to centralized wastewater plants to say the least (photo upon request).

It is time to find another solution. We here on the East End, have the opportunity to lead the way, forging solutions needed in so many communities across Long Island and the entire country to say nothing of the world.

There is an easy answer, the patented Pirana Septic System. The problem is biological. The solution is biological. The Pirana System is a modular device that can be adapted to any treatment system. There are seven Pirana models that can be used individually or mixed and matched to achieve any treatment goal . . . ALL FROM WITHIN YOUR EXISTING SEPTIC SYSTEM. The Pirana Septic System works by being able to harness some of Nature’s most powerful, efficient bacteria to do the work of digesting the organic component of sewage instead of weak intestinal bacteria that all other septic systems depend on. The results are an odorless “high quality” liquid effluent that the soil can easily provide the final treatment. By turbo-charging the microbial growth with the most advantageous delivery of oxygen, employing the use of air in an atmospheric non- depletable gaseous oxygen environment within the Pirana unit, the powerful Pirana Blend bacteria can now work for us. The Pirana System actually enhances their natural capacity to do the work of digesting waste.

It’s similar to taming wild horses. We capture them, keep them controlled and make them dependent on us for food, water and survival. We then make use of their natural capabilities in various ways. We bend their capabilities to do work for us better than we can do for ourselves . . . like pulling, carrying you on their back or pulling a wagon or carriage. The patented Pirana Septic System process, like the captured and utilized wild horse, contains and uses these powerful bacteria, bending their natural capabilities to do a better job than what the existing septic systems can provide us. And all the while constantly remediating your disposal field or pit.

The Pirana Septic System is simple. It can be installed in a few hours with a couple of shovels and a small toolbox, requiring no large machines or damage to your landscaping. The Pirana unit merely sits on the bottom of your septic tank or cesspool, accessed through the riser (if you don’t have a riser, a riser can be installed), connected to a remote air pump, using a regular 110 outlet and about as much electricity as an aquarium pump. The air pump is installed remotely, in a waterproof basin, housing or preferably inside a building or basement. The 1⁄2 inch PVC airline is buried +/-12” underground, and connected to the Pirana unit through the riser just under the lid. Add the Pirana Blend bacteria inoculum, connect the air pump, plug it in and turn it on. That’s it. One annual inspection is normally all that is required. No more pumping. No more nuisance odors and if your soil is mushy, depending on the soil type, firming will take a few weeks to a few months.

Pirana Septic Systems employ a naturally occurring, proprietary blend of bacteria, housed in a 3’ tall by 1’ wide 35 lb., cylinder that fits into your septic tank. No Department of Health permit is required if the existing system is an approved Suffolk County sanitary system. Immediately upon installation of the Pirana, 25,000 gallons per day, pass over 100 sq.ft. of cuspated plastic, housed within the unit on which the Pirana Blend bacteria create a sustainable and survivable community and begin to digest human waste.

The Pirana Septic Systems digests more than 90% of the organic material, ending the need for scheduled pumping (except where pumping of every septic tank is mandated). By digesting the solids, it also greatly reduces the material in which pathogens, and other deleterious components exist. No Pirana tank has been pumped in fifteen years of installations around this country and in fourteen other countries around the world as a requirement for maintenance. The liquid in your septic system will be clarified, the color of weak tea to crystal clear, no particles, and no odors, just a very high quality of effluent. While recycling the water component of sewage (the only function of all other septic system designs), the Pirana System also recycles the organic component of sewage while continuously remediating the biomat clogged soils surrounding your disposal area.

The production of solids should be a part of evaluating the efficiency of a septic technology. If the technology or product only recycles the water component of sewage and cannot digest and recycle the organic material, just how efficient is it? How much pollution does it actually cause? What are you paying for?

The Pirana Septic Systems is easy to install. It is affordable with an average cost of $3,500.00 purchased and installed (depending on site conditions the cost could go slightly up or down). The monthly cost for electricity is approximately $5.00 per month. The Pirana Septic System has only one moving part inside the small air pump siting remotely outside the septic tank making the system virtually maintenance free . . . typically one annual maintenance inspection by the homeowner or authorized technician. The Pirana Septic System delivers small costs and big benefits.

You may have heard about the concerns over nitrate pollution. It is a problem deserving of attention. Does the Pirana Septic System solve all problems regarding nitrates? No. But unlike any other treatment technology devised by engineers and system designers, the Pirana Septic System can denitrify both aerobically as well as the normally considered method of anaerobic denitrification while providing the other recycling processes. This doesn’t mean all nitrate problems are solved. But the Pirana Septic System offers a greater potential to reduce nitrate pollution by being capable of denitrification in both aerobic and anaerobic environments. It is multi-functional and adaptable to any waste treatment process including denitrification. The modular concept allows it to be place into any configuration to achieve the desired treatment goal.

Remember, “If Nature can’t work for you, then you have to work for Nature.” Pirana helps Nature work for you by being able to use powerful soil and leaf litter bacteria through producing the right air and oxygen environment so they can survive and prosper in the hostile and totally alien environment of a septic tank. By essentially mimicking some of Nature’s processes, the efficiency of the Pirana System is very high and therefore the size and cost of a Pirana Septic System is very small. If you are required to work beyond Nature’s natural processes, it will cost you a tremendous amount including time and maintenance. This is why it is so expensive and difficult to meet the 90% denitrification standards or nitrate limitations regulators would like to achieve for septic systems.

Nature only recycles about 50 % of the nitrogen in nitrates back into N2 atmospheric gas. Interestingly, 90 % denitrification of the nitrates produced by centralized wastewater plants is not an absolute requirement. Why septic systems?

You can significantly upgrade your existing system with the Pirana Septic System. No odors, no pumping, remediate your disposal field, help reduce nitrates and gain the knowledge that you are doing your part to help the water quality of Long Island. You might even qualify for the Southampton Village Septic Rebate program.
