Water Mill Residents Rebuff Matt Lauer's Duplex Proposal

"Today" host wants housing for a horse trainer and barn manager at his Edge of Woods horse farm on an agricultural preserve, Newsday reports.

Matt Lauer is looking to alter the site plan for his horse farm on a 40-acre tract in Water Mill, with the addition of a duplex to house his staff, but many neighbors are not happy with the proposal, Newsday reported.

An approved four-bedroom on the property will house grooms, but the "Today" host also wants housing for a horse trainer and barn manager, according to Newsday. The town bought up the development rights to the land to ensure it maintains an agricultural use, and now the planning board is considering if the housing for additional staffers would be in line with the covenant.

Lauer's attorney Timothy McCully reportedly said during Thursday's planning board meeting, "I don't think there's any question this type of structure is customary and incidental to a horse farm."

Newsday reported that Water Mill Citizens Advisory Committee Chair Rachel Verno, said, "This sets a dangerous precedent, in terms of the planning process."
