When it comes to eyesores in Port Washington, one stands out: the “Shields building” situated on the property that encompasses 5 Main Street, 1070 Port Washington Boulevard and 6 Ohio Avenue.
Currently the is leasing the property – in November, it signed a deal with Long Island Sound LLC to lease it for $1 a year – with an option to buy. Back in November, Patch reported that the property could be purchased for $898,000. Upon purchase, the town can , and turn the property into a public parking area.
What’s holding up the process?
These are tough times, according to North Hempstead Spokesman Collin Nash, adding that the town doesn’t have the funds to purchase the property yet.
Once the town raises the necessary funds, it could issue bonds to demolish the building, Nash noted.
For those eager to see the building torn down, that time likely can’t come soon enough.
