Town Offers Workshops on Preserving Historic Headstones

Monuments conservator Jonathan Appell leads July 19 and 20 sessions.

Southampton Town has many historic burial grounds, and some are in better shape than others.

To help maintain all historic headstones and grave markers in cemeteries around town, Town Clerk Sundy A. Schermeyer is offering headstone preservation workshops on July 19 and July 20 with monuments conservator Jonathan Appell.

"Gravestone conservation and historic stone preservation is the art and science of preserving all we can of our heritage carved in stone," Appell said.

"From gentle cleaning methods to reattaching fragments and resetting tilted headstones in danger of falling, Appell will guide participants through many of the procedures used by today’s preservation professionals," the town clerk's office stated.

The July 19 workshop will be at the North Sea Burial Ground. The July 20 session will take place at East Quogue Methodist Cemetery.

The workshops are both free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Call 631-287-5740 or email studenroth@southamptontownny.gov.
