Town Looks to Offer Tax Incentives for Alternative Energy Improvements

A public hearing on the proposal is set for Aug. 13 at 1:00 p.m. at town hall.

The Town of Southampton is considering offering tax incentives to homeowners who install geothermal or solar technology in their homes.

The legislation was presented to the town board recently by Councilman Chris Nuzzi, who believes the town needs to do more to turn the town green.

"Hopefully we’ll soon get to a point where clean, renewable energy systems are a more tangible option for everyone, but in the meantime it’s important that the Town, and all levels of government, continue to explore ways to incentive these systems.”

Nuzzi's plan, if adopted by the town board, would increase the maximum rebate for solar electric systems from $2,500 to $3,500, and allow for an expedited review and fee waiver of the building permit for certain residential subdivision applications.

Nuzzi is also asking his colleagues to join with him in asking the state legislature to authorize a property tax reduction for solar and/or geothermal system improvements on both residential and commercial structures by recognizing an alternative energy adjustment on the town's tax bill.
