Town Dems Are Top Signature-Getters for Obama
Southampton Democrats collected more signatures for the president's re-nomination than any other town committee in the First Congressional District.
The Southampton Town Democratic Committee last week turned in more than 300 signatures for President Barack Obama's renominating petition to get on the New York State ballot — more than any other town in the First Congressional District, which spans from Smithtown to East Hampton and Greenport.
According to the committee, New York State requires approximately 20,000 signatures to get on the presidential ballot. While Southampton Town has a population of 57,000, just 0.3 percent of the state's total population, it produced 1.5 percent of the signatures needed, the committee said in a statement Friday.
"Working with Obama for America, our highly organized Democratic Committee in Southampton Town was able to galvanize its members and Democrats to effectively and efficiently gather signatures in a very short time period," Southampton Town Democratic Chair Gordon Herr said. "Our training sessions, distribution and coordination of the petitions in a timely manner assured that our members were confident and well prepared for the task."
