The Election Success of Ken LaValle

Report takes a look at the long history of Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle's life in politics.

Just a few weeks ago longtime New York State Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle cruised to victory over his most recent opponent, Bridget Fleming, and his 19th term.

When he is sworn in this 19th term in January, he will share the distinction of being the longest-tenured senator in New York. A special report in The Suffolk Times recently took a look at the storied history of LaValle and his political history.

According to the Times, it has been 100 years since a Democrat, Thomas H. O’Keefe in 1912, was elected to represent New York’s 1st Senatorial District. LaValle first sought public office at the age of 37 in 1976 after a career as a teacher and school administrator in the Middle Country School District during the 1960s.

He divorced his mother? He has been happily married to his current wife for at least 20 years.

Why are liberals always so nasty in attacking their political opponents? What an ignorant post.

Not so, knowitall. The Fleming campaign wasn't the big-money, big-glamour show that Henry's was, as that proved to be a turnoff to Eastern Long Islanders. Ms. Fleming did run partly on women's issues, and she did notably better than Sherrye Henry, with almost 40% of the vote, proving we've come a long way in this area since 1990. Soon Ken LaValle's 100% rating from Pro-Life Long Island and his obstruction on women's health will be significant negatives for him. Still, I say congratulations to Ken LaValle on winning a 19th term. I have no problem with long-serving legislators as long as they deliver. While I believe Senator LaValle hasn't kept delivering for us, clearly most voters think otherwise. Good luck to him, and best wishes to Bridget Fleming, who ran a great campaign and will be heard from again.

LaValle does not control what does and does not go to the floor. Get real. Perhaps from his committee, but the laws of which you speak are not part of that commitee.
