Special Meeting Set for Sagaponack Police Department Proposal

A cost analysis will be presented on Sept. 7.

Quouge, Westhampton Beach each have one, Greenport also. Now, Sagaponack Village wants a village police department too. To that end, the village has scheduled a meeting for Sept. 7 to analyze the costs associated with creating a policing authority. 

The analysis, according to a report on 27-east will be provided by former Southampton Village and Southampton Town Police Chief William Wilson Jr., who was hired to provide a projection of start-up and continuing costs, including contractual obligations for both either a full-time or part-time police department. 

The idea to create a Sagaponack police department started in July with Mayor Donald Louchheim telling Newsday that he believes the village could fund it's own police department with $500,000 less than what it currently pays to the Southampton Police Department.
