South Ferry to Receive $750k in State Funds
Money will be designated for resolving docking and navigational issues, according to Sen. LaValle's office.
The Shelter Island South Ferry will receive $750,000 in New York State Transportation Department Multimodal funds to resolve docking and navigational issues, state Sen. Kenneth LaValle announced Thursday.
The ferry connects North Haven to Shelter Island; it is the only way to get a car across from the South Fork, as there are no bridges to the island. South Ferry is a private company, though it is part of State Route 114.
The multimodal program provides funds for capital improvements to rail, freight, passenger facilities, ports, aviation, roads, bridges and fixed ferry facilities, according to LaValle's office.
“The ferries and their continuous, unimpeded operation are critically important for the residents of Shelter Island as well as for visitors and the Island’s economy,” Senator LaValle said. "I am pleased that I was able to secure this much needed State funding for the ferry company, Shelter Island and East End residents and businesses.”
