Public to Weigh in on Village Annexation Thursday

Southampton Town and Southampton Village co-host hearing on possibility of village annexing portion of condo development.

A real estate developer building a 77-unit condominium community that lies partially within the Southampton Village boundaries has petitioned the village to annex the remaining portion, and now the public will have the chance to be heard on the proposal.

A public hearing is planned Thursday at Southampton Town Hall at 4 p.m., when members of both the Southampton Town Board and Southampton Village Board will take feedback.

For the annexation propocal to be accepted, not only will Southampton Village have to agree to absorb the parcels into its municipality, but the Southampton Town Board will have to sign off on the arrangement as well.  The parcels in question currently lie within an unincorporated area of town.

The luxury condos, dubbed Bishops Pond at Southampton Village, are taking shape east of Magee Street, where a sand mine and composting site once was.

The plan calls for 77 villas and townhomes and a common tennis court, clubhouse and pool, according to the development's website. A sales office has opened at 46 Jobs Lane in the village to find buyers. The development is a venture of Michael Dubb's Beechwood Organization, with Steven Dubb and George Benedict.

Benedict is the father-in-law of Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley; when the Village Board voted to set a hearing date on the petition, Epley abstained.
