Petition Aims to Stop the Legalization of Tiana Pines Apartments

So far, the online petition has garnered 95 signatures.

As of Wednesday morning, a petition that objects the conversion of the Hampton Bays-based Tiana Pines Motel to an apartment complex garnered 95 signatures — the goal is 100 by next week.

The petition was posted online by the Concerned Citizens of Hampton Bays in an effort to challenge an application submitted by the owners of the Montauk Highway hotel for a zoning variance that would legalize the use of the motel as apartments.

The Town of Southampton's Zoning Board of Appeals is set to hear the application on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at Southampton Town Hall.

The Concerned Citizens of Hampton Bays started their fight against the conversion in early 2012 — hiring a lawyer, Eric Bregman, of Farrell Fritz, P.C., to represent their interests in May of the same year.

Their main argument is that the apartments would only add to the hamlet's density problem, which places a burden on the school district.

The owners of Tiana Pines, Domenico and Vincenza Iadevaia of Carle Place, contend, according to a report on 27east, that "the actions of town officials over the years—particularly, the renewing of building permits and the issuing of COs" gives them the right to use the property as an apartment complex.
