Montauk Highway Repaving Slated for Spring 2014

Between Water Mill and Wainscott, 10 miles of road will be repaved.

Work is expected to commence in spring 2014 on repaving a 10-mile stretch of Montauk Highway, starting at the County Road 39A intersection and going eastward.

New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. said this week that the paving is a second leg of a two-phase project. The initial phase, paving of 2.3 miles of Montauk Highway between Stephen Hands Path in Wainscott and Route 114 in East Hampton, was completed on time, before Memorial Day, Thiele said.

The widening and resurfacing of County Road 39A in Southampton, to add a second eastbound lane, was also completed just before Memorial Day weekend. However, some work has continued post-Memorial Day, including painting the lanes and finishing intersections and curbs.

The second phase of the Montauk Highway project will run through Water Mill, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, and through Wainscott up until Stephen Hands Path.

Thiele said the New York State Department of Transportation has informed him that the project is now in the design stage and will likely begin accepting bids from contractors in the fall.

Thiele said in March that the $12.5 million project will be paid for with state and federal funds.
