Library to Host Expert Conversation on US/Mexico Relations

Shannon O'Neil and Alfredo Corchado will discuss foreign policy Tuesday at Rogers Memorial.

Two experts on the United States relationship with Mexico are coming to Southampton Village Tuesday for a conversation at Rogers Memorial Library.

Shannon O’Neil, Ph.D., and journalist Alfredo Corchado will discuss the current state of relations between the two countries and its future prospects.

O’Neil is an expert in many fields, including U.S.-Latin America relations, energy policy, trade, political and economic reforms, and immigration, according to the library.  Her recent book on U.S. and Mexico and their intertwined future is "Two Nations Indivisible."

Corchado is the Mexico bureau chief of The Dallas Morning News and a 2009 Harvard Nieman Fellow. He also won the Elijah Parish Livejoy Award in 2010 for courageous journalism. He has been covering the border and drug violence since 2003 and recently released a book, "Midnight in Mexico: A Reporter’s Journey Through a Country’s Descent into Darkness."

Hope Reese, a 2002 Southampton High School graduate and freelance journalist who is a frequent contributor to The Atlantic, will moderate the discussion. According to the library, she met Corchado while working for the Nieman Foundation for Journalism.

In 2011, Corchado was a speaker at a library event on reporting from the U.S.-Mexico border.

The talk begins at 7 p.m. June 25. Register at www.myrml.org or call 631-283-0774 ext. 523.
