Unemployment in Nassau and Suffolk counties combined fell to 6.2 percent in August, the state reported this week, another sign that the region continues to make gains since the Great Recession knocked out the country's economy in 2009.
According to the state's Department of Labor, Long Island's jobless rate was 7.5 percent in August 2012.
The region was flat compared to this past July, when 6.2 percent of the population claimed jobless benefits.
Breaking it down further, Nassau continues to have lower unemployment in the region, with 5.9 percent unemployed in August compared to 6.4 percent in Suffolk.
Though the region continues to trim the number of jobless, Long Island sits somewhere in the middle when comparing its unemployment rate to other areas in the state. Upstate Hamilton County scored the best in the state, with only 4.2 percent unemployed, while Bronx County had the highest number of jobless with 12 percent unemployed.
