Highway Workers Plowing Since 5 Sunday Morning

Superintendent Stephen Lynch says salt, sand mix will offer some traction, but roads still icy.

Following snowfall on Saturday night, and with temperatures in East Hampton at 24 degrees, and a wind chill of 9 degrees, on Sunday morning, the roads are icy.

East Hampton Town Highway Superintendent Stephen Lynch said the East Hampton area got about 4 inches of snow overnight, but it's the low temperatures over the rest of President's Day weekend that has him concerned.

"Don't drive the speed limit. Proceed with caution," he said.

Town Highway Department workers put down salt on Saturday night, and they have been out since about 5 on Sunday morning plowing.

"We're going to put salt, sand down for traction," he said, explaining that straight salt will melt, leading to smooth ice on the roads.

After driving around on Sunday morning, he said the roads are "slippery to some degree," but, "If they drive appropriate speeds, they shouldn't have a problem. Give themselves a little more time to get some where."

He expects workers — which included contractors and part-time drivers — to be done around noon on Sunday. He'll decide later whether they need to come back out out later on Sunday or Monday.

This is the second straight weekend highway department workers have been out in force with plows. Last weekend, a blizzard dropped more than a foot of snow on the Town of East Hampton.

Have you been out? How are the roads? Tell us in the comments below.
